Voice Over IP and Video on Demand

Requirements of IP Telephony - Video on Demand Solution

Voice over IP and video on demand are the newest technologies that created a big shock to the datacom and telecom industries. Several people are now wondering what exactly these technologies are how they work. Let's study some technical stuff.

If both the computer and the IP phone are on the same virtual local area net, then both will try to use the existing bandwidth. The easier method to stop a conflict is to use isolated virtual local area networks for IP telephony traffic and data traffic.

Benefits of Isolated VLANs

Using isolated VLANs provides the following benefits: 1. QoS can order the IP telephony traffic as it moves on the network, 2. Network engineers can classify and troubleshoot network problems easier when phones are on isolated IP subnets and VLANs.

Old-style Telephony

Old-style business telephone networks are usually built around a central control device that is called a Private Branch Exchange (PBX). This device routes voice calls thru analog or digital routes. For instance, an analog fax device or analog phone uses an analog line, but a digital phone uses a digital line. In old-style telephony, the physical address of the device is hooked on the cable to which it is connected. Thus adding, moving, or changing telephones involves a major amount of manual configuration. Many companies have a different wiring for their telephone network and for their data network. The term VoIP is used when using voice-enabled routers to change analog voice from old-style telephones into IP data-packets and route those data-packets between sites.

Live Video

Live video, or streaming video, allows users to see a video before all the data packets are inside their personal computer. Streaming media files are instantly available, they do not have a waiting period; Streaming video reduces the necessity to store big media files or to use storage space for the files before watching them. A live Streaming video is usually sent using multicast packets to several computers at the same time.

VoD

With video on demand, employers can both stream or download all of the data to their computer cache before they watch it. Downloading the whole video file before watching is also called store-and-forward. This technique reduces the load on system resources. Using a server to direct streaming media into a PC cache lets employers to retain the data and watch it at a later time. Video on demand is sent using unicast packets to the particular user requesting the video.
